You may have come across the phrase either in gaming forums of in science fiction, but exactly what is meant by virtual reality, what is it, and does it present us with any possible benefits or advantages in the future?

This phrase can be answered by either simply looking at the technology currently used, and understanding the basics of how it works, and what it tries to achieve. The more complex way of looking at this concept is by firstly asking what we understand by the word reality, before we try understanding the idea of an alternate, virtual version of reality.

Basically, if we understand the idea of reality to be the sum of all of the sensory inputs our brain receives, virtual reality is the use of technology to replace as many of those sensory inputs as possible with computer generated ones, to fool the brain into believing in a world which is false, and which only exists within the brain of the computer.

The most common form of virtual reality is one where the user wears a visor which wraps entirely round their normal field of vision. The computer then projects or displays a visual three dimensional world onto the inside f this visor, entirely replacing what the user would normally see with a computer generated view. The clever part of this is that the visor has a number of motion sensors built in to it, so that if the user turns their head, tilts their head, or moves their body entirely, the display inside the projector will move to match the user's movement, creating the illusion of the user actually moving around within this three dimensional world of the computer's.

Taking this idea further, the world may contain a number of objects, such as furniture, doors, objects that can be picked up and examined. By wearing special gloves which have a whole range of sensors built in to them, the computer can track the position, movement and actions of the user's hands, and work out whether they would be touching anything, and if so, how the objects would react. Would they be being picked up, turned, knocked over and so forth?

By adding audio as well, the user can be very immersed within this world, and with advancing technologies making greater and more realistic computer generated scenes, the user can very easily start to believe in this virtual world, or reality.

One way in which this technology is an exciting area for development is within computer and video games, and already we are starting to see early developments of this with basic visors, and hand controls which are motion sensitive. Eventually we may well all find ourselves entering an alternative reality in which to play our games, which would make chase scenes, fights and cliff top adventures even more breath taking!

Introduction: Being able to cause massive damage is well and good, but its a useless ability in either of the following cases: you cant hit your foe, or youve already been dropped. In the world of role playing games, these simple facts explain the existence of defenders, characters who dont rely on massive damage power to win the day, but get through their battles by outlasting their opponents. Defenders prefer to wear their foes down over time, and since they avoid most attacks against them, they are in a perfect position to do just that.

There are two primary possibilities for defenders, either or both of which might be represented in a given games defense-oriented characters. The first involves simply avoiding attacks, causing them to fail utterly. The second involves lessening the impact of those attacks that succeed. Obviously, the best defenders are those who are able to do both.

In Quests of the Realm, defenders are represented, as one would hope, by the defend preference.

Player Tactics: The style of game can have a strong effect on the value of playing a defender. You may wish to set your sights elsewhere in some cases, because unless they have some decent secondary advantages or methods of using their abilities, defenders can be boring to play. Not only do you lack impressive offenses, but smart foes will identify defenders and avoid attacking them. Now, on one hand, this only makes you better at doing what you do best: avoiding getting hit. On the other hand, your big value to the party is to draw off enemy attacks, and if your foes dont bother attacking you, youre useless. Worse still, just because you can often avoid attacks doesnt mean you always will. If your attacks are so weak that you find it as hard to appreciably hurt your foes and they find you, you dont have any advantage at all in single combat.

In QoTR, defenders have abilities allowing them to defend their allies, thus foiling foes regardless of who they attack. QoTR defenders also have abilities that allow them to turn a foes botched attacks to their own advantage, typically by giving them an opening to improve their next attack. If you are playing another RPG, you might want to see if you can find a character who has such abilities before you dedicate yourself to playing a defender.

On the other hand, if characters in your game tend to have multiple specialties, adding defense might be viable regardless of specialty tactics. The fact of the matter is, no matter what your other skills are, adding defense helps you stay alive, so it is always welcome. The only time you want to be careful is when considering an all-out defensive character.

On the subject of combinations, any choice can work fine, but some that stand out are attacker/defender (or blaster/defender), tanker/defender, and achiever/defender. The attacker/defender adds good damage to strong defenses, which makes for a foe both hard to kill and quite capable of killing your opponents. A tanker/defender adds phenomenal endurance to high ability to avoid hits, exponentially improving both advantages. The achiever/defender is good at avoiding attacks and good at succeeding actions (such as defenses), for a layered benefit. Such characters also have at least functional attacks to fall back on.

GM Tactics: Defenders make great boss opponents. An RPG boss, generally speaking, is outnumbered by the characters, but more individually powerful than each one. Having a defense specialization allows it to better handle the threat of multiple foes, while its naturally higher stats can still serve as offensively effective. Such an opponent can be quite stressful to players, since they get many turns but still dont seem to be causing any effect. Even if the villain isnt making much real headway itself, the sheer number of misses the characters get can make it seem much more formidable than it actually is.

Elite opponents can also benefit from a defensive specialization. A particularly effective tactic is to have a couple skilled defenders backing up more offensively-minded opponents. While the focus of these articles is always on challenging the players without putting their characters at overwhelming risk, if you are in the market for a truly dangerous battle, an attacker or blaster boss with a couple elite defender minions (provided those defenders can somehow protect the boss) makes a devastating team.

You may wish to shy away from defender fodder foes. Giving fodder opponents high defenses basically means a long, grueling, and potentially embarrassing battle. Fodder opponents are never much expected to seriously threaten the characters, but its nice for them to have at least a degree of impact. As defenders, they just get in the way and stay there for longer.

Defenders are skilled at avoiding attacks. They have good survivability, but without other specialties, can be limited in their actual impact on combat. Consider the advantages the defenders of your game have access to. All-out defenders might have really strong survivability, but can be boring to play if all they can do is dodge really well. For players, the best defenders are those that can protect their allies. For GMs, defenders are effective ways at making a battle seem much harder than it actually iswhich can be good or bad, depending on what you want the encounter to accomplish.

Nintendo GameCube: Limited But Functional

One company that's been a big name in video games for years is Nintendo. In many ways Nintendo revived interest in video game systems that can be hooked up to televisions (as opposed to video games played on home computers). It put out a number of good systems in the late eighties and throughout the nineties.

The Nintendo GameCube is the current iteration of this long line of video game platforms, but unfortunately it doesn't really measure up compared to other modern video game platforms like the new Sony PlayStation 3, and Microsoft's Xbox 360. For example the GameCube has a processor with a speed of 485 Megahertz while the PlayStation 3 has a central processor with a clock speed of 3.2 Gigahertz which controls eight other processors, and the Xbox 360 has three processors running at 3.2 Gigahertz each! The differences in memory are just as large with the GameCube having a system memory of 40 Megabytes, while the Xbox 360 has 512 Megabytes of RAM. One thing that might offset the GameCubes slow processor and small memory to some extent is the fact that the processor itself is a 128 bit unit.

The GameCube also lacks a hard drive which both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 feature. While apparent deficiencies in hardware can be made up for to some extent by the unique hardware architectures and software, the lack of a hard drive put the GameCube at a stark disadvantage because of the way being able to store various data allows the user of a video game platform to customize the video gaming experience. For example the Xbox 360 allows users to create their own sound tracks to go along with games and then store that music on the hard drive. Apparently with the GameCube, there isn't that option, so the user is stuck with whatever sound comes with the software.

The GameCube does have a decent amount of networking capability. Besides the ability to support four players on a single unit, the GamCube has an optional 56 Kbps modem adapter and a separate broadband adapter. The broadband adapter allows for playing over DSL and cable modems, with Local Area Network play an option on some game titles. It also has parallel and serial ports as well as two Digicard ports and one Type III PCMCIA expansion slot.

Another thing that puts the GameCube at a huge disadvantage when compared to the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is the fact that it's disk drive is designed for Nintendo's proprietary eight centimeter mini DVD. Each mini DVD only holds 1.5 Gigabytes of data which is severely limited compared to the Blu-ray drive that comes on the PS3 which can access discs holding 54 Gigabytes and the Xbox 360's optional HD-DVD drive which can access discs holding 30 Gigabytes worth of data.

The fact that the disk drive only takes the eight centimeter discs also means that the GameCube 360 is not a multifunctional platform the way the other systems are. The inability of this platform to play CD's DVD's and other media limits it to the realm of strictly being a video game platform while the PS3 and Xbox 360 are also CD and DVD players.

In all, while the Nintendo GameCube can't really compete with the other video gaming platforms on the market today, it seems to serve well as strictly a video gaming device.

These brackets are usually adjustable, because of course as your child grows he, or she, will eventually be able to reach these mobiles, and what you do not want is a child able to get their head up to mobile height and start exploring the mobile, because they could easily find themselves caught in its loop, and the consequences could be awful. These cot based mobiles are therefore more suited to a child who is under 18 months, after which ceiling based mobiles are more suited.

The advantage here is that you'll have better sound quality, more choice of music, and you'll be able to adjust the volume. Now we see thousands of people playing online games such as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super mario etc for free but despite its history dating back to 1970s, for most people online gaming began with the explosion of Internet in 1993 and with the advent of Doom and Warcraft sometime in 1994 or 1995. This got further boost with publishers starting to add Internet connectivity to computer games in 1994-95.

The media, in fact, have themselves been ignorant about online games history. As far as they are concerned, online gaming just coincidentally happened when their advertisers started producing Internet-capable games. But it isn't so...

Early Years of development

In early 1950's a college student created a game much like Tic-Tac-Toe for a class project to be played on dinosaur computers of those days complete with cathode ray tubes for the screen display. The 1960's had MIT students programming a game called "Space war" that could be played with two people over a primitive network. The late 1960's brought the first "real" video games like table tennis and shooter games.

The 70s - the game begins

Serious online gaming began with the first interactive online game called ADVENT. In fact networked gaming got conceptualized with ADVENT. Networked gaming had users playing against each other within an online fantasy world. The first networked game was called Mazewar, a game which involved networked players traveling through a maze and attempting to kill one another.

Next came the interpersonal interaction in a multi-player environment. The first such game was called DUNGEN. DUNGEN had players competing against one another to complete a series of quests. DUNGEN provided with new settings and players each time the user logged on.

The late 1970's saw the start of video game craze with more and more households getting computer savvy. As a natural corollary, people started writing their own games for the home computers. These programming hobbyists traded and sold these home-grown games in local markets.

Other changes in the 1970's were home gaming consoles which used game cartridges. That meant the people could collect games cartridges for one base unit instead of having bulky game console systems.

The 80s - some pause before the storm

1980's saw growing craze for the video and computer game craze, but online gaming wasn't on the horizon yet. New games with better sound and graphics were introduced and gained popularity. Pole Position and Pac-man were two that achieved big popularity. It was during 1980's when Nintendo introduced its first gaming system.

The 90s - revolution begins

The 1990's saw the phenomenal growth in both popularity and technology mostly because of the rise of 3-D and multimedia.

Myst, the intellectual adventure game introduced gaming on the CD-ROM format. Fancier 3-D graphics hardware made FPS (first person shooter) games such as Quake possible.

The late 1990's saw the exponential growth of the Internet, MUDs (multi-user dungeons) which made online games wildly popular. New and improved graphical interfaces had people all over the world playing against each other not only in FPS games but also in real time strategy games (RTS games) as well as third person games like Grand Theft Auto.

This was also the period when websites started offering online games such as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super Mario, and other free online flash games and non-flash based games free for playing after registering with them. This really pushed online gaming into the popular psyche.

The 21st Century - world is just a playground

Early years of the 21st century were dominated by the DVD-CD-ROM. It has changed the way online games are played. Digesters and the Technology of Anaerobic Digestion

Many farms in Europe are using energy crops which are processed in digesters to produce biogas. In most cases the main crop used is corn silage. To generate significantly more methane than seasonal corn supplies and/or manure alone, digester designs in Europe are increasingly being modified to accept multiple substrates, from grease to corn silage to food waste.

Manure is a well known potential and largely free feedstock, but has a low energy content since cows have already substantially digested the substrate, so adding high-energy value materials produces more methane. Cattle slurry is about 12% dry matter and produces about 25 cubic metres of biogas per tonne, but broiler manure would be two to four times more efficient. Unfortunately, about half of the energy goes heating the dung and there will be additional losses if the dung is not fresh, but it is still worthwhile.

The biogas is produced is usually burned to generate renewable energy. When used for heat only, the biogas is burned in a modified gas boiler to provide heat energy to heat the digester and for export. When used for electricity generation a gas engine is used, and the cooling water is best used for a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) use. This means heating greenhouses, or piping the hot water to a local factory for use in manufacturing.

The digester is kept at an optimum temperature of between 90-95 degrees F. About 40,000 cubic feet of methane gas is produced per day in an average sized AD unit.

The recent costings have been completed in which such digesters are expected to bring in at least $20,000 per year, although this would need verification, it seems to be a substantial sum.

Digesters produce a mixture of gases, primarily methane and carbon dioxide, and a nutrient-rich slurry or 'liquor'.

However, some industries use the term to refer to a completely different type of digester. In papermaking the digester is a special piece of machinery used in the process. Its purpose is to cook small wood chips for several hours in order to soften them.

For a normal digestor the gasholder is equipped with a gas outlet, while it is also equipped with an overflow pipe to lead the sludge out into a drainage pit. Disposal of the products of digestion is a subject in itself.

The solid waste output from a digester can possibly be used instead of sawdust for animal bedding, and is also sold as mulch. Many other uses have been suggested, and these are too numerous to discuss here.

Utility companies are increasingly required to accept biogas power into the local power supply grid, and to provide smart meters that tell the digester plant operator exactly how much electricity is being produced or consumed at any given time and at what payment rate/cost, enabling operators to plan and balance their use and supply input times for when the power is needed most in the power grid during peak usage times when it is most expensive/commands the highest value to the digester plant operator. Operators suggest that this can add up to something like 15 percent on annual electricity revenues.

At one site the digester reportedly assumed to transform 83% of the biodegradable material into gas. The biogas there is produced at a high purity of 65% methane, and its heat of combustion is 5,720 kcal cubic metres at standard conditions. A suspended-pipe hot-water heat exchanger in the digester is used to heat the digester to between 35 degrees and 40 degrees Centigrade.

The water that remains at the top of the digester is decanted out of the digester through a floating drainpipe. This water may be returned directly to an oxidation ditch for further treatment. The digester is heated, and the temperature is raised so that it continues to the desired temperature.

This type of circulation is continued until the liquor leaving the top of the digester is within the target temperature (within the mesophilic and thermophilic range). Then in some plants types the circulation is terminated and the heat content of the heating section is restored by circulating the liquor therein through a heat exchanger to raise the temperature of the liquor.

Digesters are currently seeing a rapid rise in popularity and the reason for this is the lower operational (energy) costs when compared with biological aeration due to the avoidance of aeration and the use of the methane produced as an energy source. The rising price of oil is of course the biggest factor that has increased popularity. Also, research has found that anaerobic systems can be developed that have the ability to operate at much higher loadings than previously thought possible, raising the profit to be made from these systems.

Digesters can be considered for a wide variety of agricultural and industrial and commercial sites. From agricultural community scale Anaerobic Digesters to supermarkets with waste food, to municipal authorities with organic waste in their collected waste streams, all should now be considering the installation of a digester of one type of another. Often people assume that playing computer games or video games is a very anti social activity, and is a solo activity which isolates an individual from the real world, cuts them off from other people and then allows them to sit on their own in a small dark room hitting keys over and over again in order to mindlessly destroy anything that moves on their screen. Games get better as developers learn how to squeeze the last bit of power out of a console, but other than that, every single game made for a particular console will always run on that console. The bad part about all this is that even though the XBox 360 is a computer, it's a totally locked computer and you can't even make backups of the very games you own. That's not good. I've had enough hard disks crash on me and enough CDs and DVDs become unreadable that I've become pretty paranoid. In my work I'd never rely on a piece of software that I cannot back up. Yet, that's exactly the situation gamers are in. They can't back up their own games. If a game DVD goes bad - and that can easily happen given how much use they get - you're simply out of luck. No one is going to give you a new DVD. You have to buy your own XBox software all over again. No XBox backup for you. That's not a good situation.

So what's the solution? There really isn't a clean one. Microsoft knows its software and hardware, and they decided to not allow backups of their game DVDs. To keep people from doing backups of their DVDs, the game files are encrypted and the XBox will only run special XBox 360 media. Does that mean those who are determined to protect their investment via backups are simply out of luck? No, there are ways to get into the XBox 360 so you can do backups. In fact, there's a whole community out there dedicated to XBox modifications and the ability to download XBox 360 games, XBox 360 movies, XBox 360 firmware, and Xbox software. Holographic tuning, also known as Holographic Planar Concentrator, is a new technology with one goal in mind cheaper and small solar cell collectors. This system was solely to stun the fans with the groundbreaking 64-bit graphics and the same traditional titles. Some games to show the power of the Nintendo 64 were Mario 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

After the Nintendo 64 the designers were in a competition with Playstation's ideas to make their consoles as compact as possible. That was the birth of the Gamecube. This was the first system to feature a Wireless Controller (Wavebird).

The lemmings for PSP game is the newest incarnation of the beloved classic Lemmings game originally created for Amiga in 1991. Gamers have been playing this game for a long time and it's only getting better with each new version.

Lemmings are little furry critters that don't have much of a mind of their own. They will walk to their death if someone isn't there to guide them and keep them safe. The object of the game is to keep your lemmings alive. You will have a predetermined amount of lemmings at the start of each level, and you must successfully guide them through the level to the exit while avoiding the dangers that lurk around every corner. There are several types of lemmings; diggers, bashers, climbers, floaters, pickers, bombers, blockers, and builders. You must tell these critters what to do to keep them from dying, such as dig through stuff, bombing stuff, climbing stuff, etc. There will usually be a few casualties as sometimes you have to strategically destroy some lemmings to save the majority. As long as you save the minimum number per level, you move on to the next harder level.

The original Amiga Lemmings game was good for it's time but it was very 90's, poor sound and video resolution. The new Sony PSP Lemmings version is equip with sound fit for a home theater system and video graphics that are truly up to modern gaming standards. The new version also includes several enhancements that either weren't available on the older versions or weren't as good as people would like. The thumb stick has replaced the computer mouse making it easy to move around the screen in levels and scan the entire playing level. You are now able to pause the game while still making changes to the lemmings and scan around the screen, this makes it much easier to keep track of everything that is happening on the level as sometimes things are happening that you can't see without scanning. There is a fast forward button now, this eliminates having to wait for all your little guys to get to the exit. You can, not only, create custom levels, but now you can upload your levels to the internet right from the PSP so other gamers can play and evaluate them.

Lemmings for PSP is truly the next evolution of the game and is well worth playing. I haven't been able to stop playing it since I purchased it. If you like puzzle and logic games, you will love Lemmings. If you have no clue what a lemming is, you are in for a sweet surprise. 2 thumbs up for this one, it is well worth the low (at least for now) price.

You should basically know what the different types of Chess pieces are. They have generally become a well-known part of culture and anyone should be able to look at a Chessboard and recognize it for what it is. The King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, and Pawn are all highly symbolized pieces which each have a special set of rules, moves, and uses. What many people do not realize, however, even if they have experience with the game, is exactly why those pieces are called the names they are. These Chess pieces did not originate as Kings, Queens, and the like, but simply found their most popular form in them.

The Chess pieces, when the game was originally conceived in India, were all based on war elements. Infantry and calvary, elephants and chariots were all represented by pieces much like Pawns, Knights, Bishops, and Rooks. These pieces played out the game, trying to gain dominance over the other player's army. As the game spread to Eastern Asia, the pieces changed somewhat but still kept a military theme. The most importance piece at this stage, instead of being called the King, was usually referred to as the General. Even when the game eventually moved to Europe, the game did not catch on until the pieces were redesigned with a court-like theme instead of the popular military one.

Pawns kept the idea of the infantry and grew to represent the peasants from a court. They were considered expendable pieces, as the entire game was built around protecting the court. During the phase of Medieval Chess, however, these pieces were given a little more substance, and each particular Pawn was generally given a name relating to a certain commoner's occupation. Some Pawns were considered to be city guards, farmers, merchants, doctors, and innkeepers. While these special ranks did not denote anything special upon the Pawns, it attempted to give a little more story to the game of Chess and make things a little more diverse.

The Rook was originally symbolizing of a chariot and the word itself sounds remarkably familiar to the Persian word for "chariot." These Persian war chariots were often heavily armored with fortified stone work, giving the Chess piece the image of a mobile building. The design eventually reshaped itself into a turret and the modern Rook was born. Knights are usually represented by horses and are rather straightforward in their history and appearance. They never have had drastic meaning changes or appearance.

Bishops seem to generate from the Staunton Chess set. They are given a tall hat, much like a Bishop's mitre. This form, however, also pays homage to the original form of the Bishop, with the traditional deep groove also symbolizing the tusks of the elephant that the piece initially represented. The Queen, however, has had the most transformation over time. Originally only being allowed to move one space diagonally and to make a jump like a Knight only once in a game, by 1600, the piece was given the powers it is granted today. Additionally, the King was changed from a General to keep with the modern court theme. Just as with a General leading a war, a country is powerless without its King, making it be the most important piece of a Chess game.

Everywhere you turn, the news of Xbox 360's Halo 3 release is out there. The game is garnering such attention because the franchise has been so successful and this is the latest and greatest. Halo 3's release is one of the biggest video game events to date. Part of the reason for this is the coverage the game is receiving. You don't have to be a gamer to run across Halo 3 everywhere you turn. Many news programs are constantly running stories about this new game.

The original Halo game came out with the launch of the original Xbox, and it has been a popular gaming franchise ever since. This definitely isn't a game they threw together just to keep the franchise going. They seem very committed to producing a top of the line game for Halo fans.

1. Play through every song without stopping to investigate areas that interest them or areas they are unsure of. Students need to examine the music they are learning and be asking questions as they are playing. Observation is important to find the details that need attention. Playing through the music over and over again from beginning to end, and going on to the next song in the same way limits possibilities for improvement. A learning process involves asking questions along the way and paying attention to areas that need to be thoughtfully reviewed.

2.Practice without a specific goal that adds creative purpose to their playing. Without specific goals and strategies for achieving those goals practice is meaningless. Progress isn't measured by the clock, but by the product. Students need to know what they are trying to produce to be effective in their practice.

5. Gloss over the notes without becoming intimate with each part of the music. It takes patience to look deeper into areas of the music to become completely familiar with every melody. The ear needs to hear it clearly and be certain of what is there. Ignoring areas of uncertainty and avoiding thoughtful, creative strategies to bring them into clarity is a matter of discipline. It's natural for students to put off looking at these areas and focus instead on the areas they can already play well. Uncertainty is uncomfortable and it feels safer to play the parts of the music that are familiar. It is human to avoid what we feel anxious about, and it takes courage to face each challenge in the music creatively.

Even young children can learn effective practice habits that honor creative work and not just time at "work." Finish lines and artificial boundaries that don't really exist shouldn't rule. I'll never forget the surprise when opening screen the game loaded, a crystal clear speech of a ghost (I assume) exclaiming "Ghostbusters" followed by a demonic laugh. This lead into a near perfect rendition of the Ghostbusters theme tune from the movie, well, if you excuse the fact there were no vocals.

Ok, so on to business, "we're ready to believe you". The first task was to choose your car and equipment. You had to choose between 3 cars, a beetle, the hearse from the movie or a pink sports car. It seemed that the hearse was the best all rounder as you needed to keep some cash spare for your equipment. Some of the equipment were 'nice to haves' and some were essentials. One essential item was a trap which you needed for capturing the ghosts you caught at each location. You also needed a paranormal detector so you could see where a ghost within the town was most likely to appear.

Once you had caught as many ghosts as you could hold, you would then have to return them back to Ghost HQ before hitting the streets again. As activity got stronger and more intense, you could see the gate keeper and the key master moving faster and faster through the town to try and make that fateful rendezvous. As you no doubt know from the film, once they meet then things really start hotting up.

As you progress, you notice that all of the ghosts seemed to be heading for one location situated in the centre of the city, Zuul. As much as you try to prevent this, eventually things get to hard to handle. The infamous marshmallow man starts to appear and deals huge amounts of damage to buildings through the city. If you'd spent some of your starting money on bait then you could keep him at bay for a while.

However, it would soon get to the point of no return and the gate keeper and key master would finally join forces. Once you found the location of the Stay Puff marshmallow man, then it would be time to pay him a visit. This is where the hardest part of the game presented itself. In order to get to the top of the building of Zuul, you first had to get at least two of your men through the legs of Mr Marshmallow.

If you succeeded to do this then you found yourself at the top of the building. Where you had been trying to avoid "crossing the streamers" throughout the game, now was the time to through caution to the wind and give it a try against all odds...

Rogue leveling in World of Warcraft can be considered a relatively straight-forward process. This is due to the fact that playing as a Rogue character you are really designed as a killing machine, able to kill mobs very quickly. When I first started playing WoW I played a rogue main character the majority of the time. Eventually I leveled up my night elf rogue to level 60 - using daggers the entire process! What a mistake and ineffective use of time that was!

One of the first decisions you may need to decide as a Rogue is to use Sword or Dagger. My advice is to you as a fellow rogue is to lose the dagger. Your mainhand weapon needs to be a sword/mace. The benefit of using a sword (or mace) as your mainhand weapon is that every hit will result in dealing a large damage to the enemy. When using a sword sinister strikes are twice as powerful, particularly in these early WoW level sinister strikes can be almost as powerful as a backstab attack - whilst limiting the risk of missing which some when using backstab.

When using Swords and Maces you don't really need to be concerned with positioning - just smash with your Sinister Strike. Unfortunately, when you're rogue leveling, good fist weapons are few and far between in the leveling process.

Gearing up a rogue (like most other melee classes during the WoW leveling process) is all focused on maximizing damage whilst leaving just enough stamina for a reasonable health recovery.

Paramount Drops Blu-ray DVD Technology

An unfortunate truth in the area of TV technology is that the best technology is not always the one that triumphs when two competing technologies go into competition with each other. The history of TV technology is littered with examples of this. The one that most people are most familiar with is the format war between the Betamax and VHS video cassette tape formats. Even though VHS won that particular format war, many people have argued that Betamax was actually the superior format. A less prominent example can be seen in the early Laser Disc video format that was introduced at about the same time as the VHS and Betamax tape formats. Laser Discs were essentially primitive DVD's that were about the same size as an old fashioned vinyl LP record. Even though DVD's are the preferred format over video cassettes now, the two video cassette formats soundly defeated the Laser Disc format when it came to consumer video.

Right now we can see another example of this unfolding with the High Def DVD format war. There are two formats in this war that are both vying for control over the market. One format is called Blu-ray and it's backed by Sony and a number of other computer hardware manufacturers and movie studios. Its rival is called HD DVD, which was invented by Toshiba and is backed by Microsoft and a few other movie studios. Both of these formats are based on similar laser technology, both use discs that are the same size as standard DVD's, and neither format can be played on the other format's players.

The Blu-ray format is the superior one in terms of data storage capacity. It can store about twenty five gigabytes per side of a single disc for a total of fifty gigabytes per disc. By contrast, the HD DVD format can store about fifteen gigabytes per side of a disc for a total of only about thirty gigabytes. Twenty gigabytes per disc is an extremely big difference between the two formats. To be fair though, HD DVD has some proprietary interactive features that Blu-ray doesn't have.

In spite of Blu-ray's technical superiority- at least as a storage media for computers- and the fact that it has been outselling HD DVD by two to one in terms of number of discs sold, Blu-ray has failed to win the format war. That's because a format war is waged through propaganda, forming alliances, and pricing tactics at least as much as it's waged through technological expertise.

The latest blow to Blu-ray's superior position has been the decision of Paramount to release high def DVD's only in the HD DVD format. Previous to this announcement, Paramount had been releasing its titles in both formats, but now it has taken a pay off in order to market and produce HD DVD exclusively.

This has been a blow to consumers and retailers as well as the Blu-ray format. Retailers who are currently selling Paramount titles published on Blu-ray won't be getting restocks of those discs, and Paramount has even made an about face on announcements that it will publish recently released movies on Blu-ray.

While this move may be good for HD DVD, and Paramount may have gotten a short term profit from it, Paramount's reputation is sure to be damaged. Perhaps even irreparably.

The first ever Superman game to be developed was produced by Atari in 1979 and was called..."SUPERMAN". Most Superman games that released in the following years followed more or less the same storyline. In its arcade version it was only "Death and Life of Superman" developed by Sunsoft of America and Blizzard Entertainment which was truly worth playing.

However, the predictable and linear gameplay changed with the release of Superman: Shadow of Apokolips for PlayStation 2. Perhaps for the first time gamers got to play a Superman who had to use his brains as much as his brawn. It was a game that involved stealth and puzzles in addition to action. In Shadow of Apokolips, Superman took on several arch villains like Metallo, Livewire and Parasite. Superman: Man of Steel developed primarily for the Xbox platform too was another exciting game to play.

Soul Calibur IV is the latest addition to the ever popular weapons based fighting game and perhaps the biggest talking point of this release is the Star Wars crossover. The Xbox 360 and PS 3 versions will exclusively include Yoda and Darth Vader respectively as well as a Star Wars stage including full Imperial March background music. However, there are other points worth mentioning before the game's release on 1st August.

Many possible technologies exist that can power web based games. Php, HTML, CGI and Java amongst them, but the most common plugin used to design browser games by far is Adobe Flash, previously known as Macromedia Flash. One of the biggest reasons for this is that Flash has become a definite web standard.

Many PCs come with the Flash player installed. It is compatible with Linux, Apple Mac, BSD, cellphones, PDAs and a whole host of other devices. Over 520 million unique installations of Flash have been recorded, and it has been around since the days of Windows 98. This statistic accounts for approximately 95% of all Internet users.

Flash Player is also a free download, so if the user does not have it, it's only a few seconds and negligible bandwidth away, no matter the platform. Likewise, Adobe Flash is a comparably cheap product for the developers, and time input required is minimal to create simple games, compared to using other technologies.

A powerful but often overlooked feature of Flash is that it makes small files. For ten megabytes, in Flash, you can get a full featured game. How I Got Into the Game Industry

Not long ago, I was a starry-eyed kid who wanted to make video games for a living. I grew up with Mario and had every Nintendo home console from the Super NES forward. I was even one of those entrepreneurial types who made fan sites. It started simply with AOL's free web space and then grew slowly to other free web space sites until finally a domain of its own. That site was known as The N Chamber--guess what the N stood for--and at one point Google had listed us first for the search phrase: "Nintendo dolphin." Those were certainly good times but unfortunately our web presence was connected with eFront and their scandal brought everything to a fiery collapse.

At this point I was maybe 14 or 15 years old developing websites and offering my "opinion" on the industry news and with game reviews. To think that anyone seriously listened to what I had to say is laughable to me today. But, I was a fan and I loved the industry--if nothing else, I learned a lot about web development and the game industry. After the eFront meltdown, I was still active in the game fan site arena and worked on a few more websites before I finally called it quits. I tried to resurrect The N Chamber on numerous occasions but, it was not the same for a variety reasons including Google no longer listing us in a favorable search position and realizing it was futile trying to compete with the likes of IGN or Gamespot--blogs were not a big thing yet. Nonetheless, I worked on multi-platform gaming websites--GamerPlay/WiredPlay--and although they didn't get very far, I learned a lot of PHP and MySQL programming as I was bent on creating my own content management system.

I was probably 16 or 17 in the end days of my fansite years. I had still not actually made a real game yet. I tried learning C++ on my own but, that never got too far. In my last two years of high school, we had majors. I had picked the Computer Science major and it was there that I really learned how to code. I took C++ and Java as well as Web Design--which was cake for me--and a computer architecture class--didn't care for that class and still don't. Luckily, my programming classes were not super strict so we got to create games for our projects. Programming anything else would have just been ridiculously boring. My first "games" were generally crappy ASCII graphics experiences but, I had a blast. We made a really dumbed down ASCII "Final Fantasy" like RPG that had one level in my first semester. In the second semester, we did some card games but, the project I was most proud of was an ASCII version of Defender. It only had one level as well but I managed to figure out how to have the game scroll so enemies would come towards you while you moved your plane. We figured out how to use color and sound. It was the biggest game I had ever made at the time--and I thoroughly loved it.

Come senior year of high school and senioritis was totally setting in. No one wanted to do any real work. Outside of my programming classes, I just got my B's and was plenty happy with it. But, in my Java class, it was more game making. We did some crappy projects that was supposed to teach us what we needed to know for the Advanced Placement exam but for the final projects, we could do whatever we wanted. I made a version of Missile Command in my first semester. With Java, we could more easily use windows, draw shapes, and import images so this was the first game I had made that wasn't in ASCII. If I were to look at my code for that game today, I'd probably cringe in pain but, I loved it then. Each game that I did pushed the bar a little higher so for the final project of my last semester, I attempted to recreate Super Mario Bros. it was the best looking game that I had ever made because I basically took the graphics off the Internet. The performance was not so hot but I still loved doing it. Mario moved, jumped, stomped and all that and the enemies moved and the screen scrolled but, it was all imperfect--I did the best I could.

Upon graduating high school, I received the gold medal in Computer Science for the class of '04. I wasn't the best programmer--I might have been the best Computer Science student grades-wise. It was probably a mixture of the image that I had created of myself and the grades. It was all about marketing which, ironically, is the major I settled on in college. The first college that I chose to attend was the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona. They had a game design program and was probably one of the best schools for that at the time. There are all kinds of schools that have game design programs today. I took some game related courses and because it was a multimedia major, I also took classes in Photoshop and Illustrator as well as XHTML.

Being the go-getter that I am, before I started my college career I got an internship over the summer with a game company in New York--my home. I tried contacting every game company in the city that I could find and only one ever got back to me--Black Hammer Game. All I did while I was there was test a game: Supremacy: Four Paths to Power. It was a turn-based strategy game and I am not a big fan of those types of games. I didn't really learn too much and there were other issues going on with the game but, I did meet Nikita Mikros--who happens to be my boss today. So the summer ended, I got something nice to write on my resume and off to college I went.

Everything was new and nice in Arizona. It was a different environment than NYC and it was college. I did pretty damn well in my first semester maintaining a near 4.0 GPA but, I did not end up staying and finishing my degree in game design. I transferred back to New York where I went to school for business. Pretty crazy choice considering how much I loved games, right? Perhaps. I really didn't think that I needed a game specific degree to make games and considering what I am doing today, maybe I was right.

The day I got back to New York, I was scheduled to appear in a meeting at a company that my friend worked for--they needed a programmer and apparently I could program. This was a company that did web-based programming work so that was what I did. Luckily I had the knowledge from all the days I spent working on those websites. I worked there for a little over two years and it was, if nothing else, good experience and I improved my programming. I wasn't making games--though I tried to lobby for it--but, programming is programming. I still followed the news in the game industry and once or twice attempted to work on gaming websites again but, they fell pretty flat.

I left my job doing web-based work a little towards the middle of 2007 and started at a game company--Tiny Mantis Entertainment, founded by Nikita Mikros of Black Hammer Game. I had kept in some contact with Nik Mikros and did a small project for him but, that was about it. It was pretty coincidental that he needed a programmer and I was sick of my old job. So there it was, I was in the game industry. This isn't Electronic Arts and I'm not working on Halo but, I still love doing it a lot more than "web applications". In the year that I've been working at Tiny Mantis, I've done quite a few different projects--some of which aren't really games and some that will never see the light of day. I did the programming for Lil' Bush: Iraq Hero for Comedy Central, a Poker game for the France-based Boonty, and a sequel to an Ed, Edd, N' Eddy game for Cartoon Network. You might see some ad banners from Hyundai programmed by yours truly at some point in the near future as well.

Sometimes, I can't believe that I am doing what I am doing. Some kids wish to be an astronaut or something and then maybe they'll get there. I feel generally blessed that I'm able to get paid to do what I really want to do--make games. I can't say I want to be programming forever but I love the industry. I was interviewed by a high school student aspiring to get into games not too long ago. It reminded me of my own unmapped road and I was glad to be able to offer some insight. I don't know everything and I'm still "new" to the industry but, I hope I was able to offer him something. I didn't get to tell him my entire story as I have here and that is probably why I wrote this. This is my experience of how I got here. There are probably better ways to break into the industry and every year new people are working at EA, Activision, Midway, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc. I can only offer my story in hopes that other starry-eyed kids dreaming of working in the game industry can take away something from my experience.

Whenever people start talking about the popular TV show, Law and Order (and who doesn't?), invariably someone has to sing the opening strain of the theme song: "dun dun dun dun daaaaaa." It's that familiar, and that closely associated with the show.

We do we start on this? Yes, it is a strong statement, yet with all the news, particularly regarding the sales figures for this console, it may be true after all. Though a little refining and definition may be called for, just to put it into perspective.

Just in case you didn't know, the Wii and Wii Fit are at the top of the list of consoles being constantly chased by the PS3 and the Xbox 360. So you've been playing through your Real-Time Strategy games and are starting to get bored with the same thing over and over. You want something bigger, better, more complex. Well, Gas Powered Games has given us Supreme Commander, an RTS of unprecedented scale. And I mean enormous; you don't make a base of a few buildings, you use dozens, and hundreds more in resources farms. You don't build a couple tanks and send them to wipe out the enemy. You build strategic missiles and long-range artillery to soften up the enemy, then move your army of 200 units into their base. Supreme Commander (popularly called SupCom) is unbelievably large, and sets a new standard for RTS.

The story takes place in 3844 A.D., after humans have colonized much of the galaxy. After several events, three factions emerge: the United Earth Federation, trying to restore order to the galaxy; the Cybran nation, a group of human-AI cyborgs trying to liberate their brethren; and the Aeon Illuminate, humans taught "The Way" by an alien race and trying to spread their beliefs throughout the rest of mankind. You start in any battle with an Armored Command Unit or ACU. This is the base unit, and allows you to begin construction of all other units and buildings.

The ACU is supported by engineers, who can build more buildings but at a slower pace. Air, land, and naval factories produce units, while mass extractors and power generators produce resources. Mass is used in the building process, and energy is used to run buildings and units. Resources are stockpiled in storage, but if you run out, you don't stop building. The more resources you use that you don't actually have, the slower you produce units and buildings. Factories can be upgraded from Tech 1 to Techs 2 and 3, allowing production of better units and better engineers, who can build higher level buildings.

Overall, each faction can produce around 30-40 different unit types and around the same number of different buildings. At a low level, each faction's units perform about the same, but at the higher levels they diversify. Each faction also gets three unique experimental units which can easily turn the tide of battle, but are very expensive to produce.

SupCom's single-player campaign gives each of the three factions six missions. While it doesn't seem like much, each mission expands several times, and can last several hours. In the first few, the player is confined to low level units, which can prove quite boring. The only way to defeat your enemy is to build large numbers of units and continually throw them at the enemy. In the last two missions, you gain access to Tech 3 units and buildings, allowing you to come up with your own strategies. The skirmish and multiplayer modes make up for this, with many maps and options to play with. The maps range in size from 5km x 5km to 81km x 81km. The largest maps are perhaps the biggest even seen in RTS, and can take many hours to complete. SupCom also has in all probability the most nuclear explosions per round in any game. To win, you must destroy the enemy's ACU, which explodes in a nuclear fashion. Nuclear missiles are also the best way to destroy the enemy's base. However, every attack has a defense, and nuclear missiles can be stopped.

So, if you are experienced with RTS's and are looking for something more, check out Supreme Commander. It does have a steep learning curve, so I would only recommend it for experienced players. The scale is enormous, and allows players to come up with multiple strategies so that no game ever plays the same way. So what makes Wii so appealing, that they are sold out in stores within hours of being stocked. Compared to the other next generation game consoles the graphics are nothing to get exited about. What Wii has managed to do, is get people off the couch to have some fun. The new system is easy for all age groups to play from the 5 year old child to the grandmother. The other thing so appealing about the Wii is the price is about half that of the Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360. The size is also about half that of it's competitors, and with the ease of setting up it is much more portable. The popularity of the new system has caused sales to outpace supplies. Murder mysteries have quite a popular following in the board game world, as they generally raise the stakes higher than most other forms of mystery. With a number of suspects available, players usually race against each other to uncover information and solve the crime before the others. Sometimes, players play as the suspects themselves and other times they act as independent gumshoes. In either case, however, deduction board games are some of the most popular sources of entertainment in the gaming realm.

One such game, Orient Express, gives players the chance to use their highly developed skills of deduction and reasoning to solve an intriguing mystery. However, unlike other detective games, Orient Express doesn't end when the first player figures out the solution to the murder. The train is on a set path from Paris to Istanbul and will make its complete route before the game ends. It is the job of the players to solve the mystery within this time frame, and it is perfectly possible for more than one player to correctly solve the mystery by the time that the Orient Express reaches Istanbul.

Players begin the game by choosing one of 10 preset mysteries before the game starts. Each of these 10 mysteries has been predetermined and can only be played once. There is a common theme through all of the cases, in that a murder has been committed by one of the eight possible suspects and it is up to the players to solve the murder before the train reaches Istanbul and the murderer runs free. The eight different suspects under investigation are an actress, a ballerina, a colonel, a fortune-teller, a gambler, a diplomat, a baroness, and a count. Someone on the train was murdered by someone in that group and it is the duty of the players to discover who.

Another inventive deduction game is Mystery of the Abbey, which allows players the chance to solve a thrilling murder mystery while additionally providing a unique atmosphere to enhance the level of fun and game play. The goal of the game is to solve the murder of the unfortunate Brother Adelmo, who was discovered at the bottom of a cliff by the monastery. Twenty-four different monks live in the monastery and it is the goal of players to discover the murderer before anyone else. However, normal monastic life is still observed during this investigation, providing a number of twists during the game.

Suspects are divided into a number of different categories to distinguish them. All of the monks are either of the Templar, Franciscan, or Benedictine orders, and are either Fathers, Brothers, or Novices. They either wear hoods or they do not, are either clean-shaven or bearded, and are either fat or thin. With all of these different distinguishing characteristics, players can slowly narrow down the list of suspects until they feel confident enough to make an accusation. However, as the game progresses and players begin to learn more about the culprit, they make revelations. If these revelations prove correct at the end of the game, they can score points for the player. In the end, the player with the most points wins, making it possible to win the game without being the player who solved the murder. A unique twist on a mystery, both of these games give players the chance to play detective in an exotic setting.

Video games are now held to new standards as of lately due to the recent releases of the new consoles, which makes it even harder for sequels to crowned as a premium title. This would be the case for the newly released Ninja Gaiden 2 for the X-Box 360! As a fan of the 360 one would anticipate the arrival of this game seeing how it's predecessor is hailed to be one of the greatest actions games of it's time. Now Ninja Gaiden 2 does not break ground into some new way to design action games but it does do a great job at being a sequel, and by that last phrase it is meant that it meets all the requirements of the game before it and includes some new aspects to get old and new players into the title and series.

Let's start with the things that Ninja Gaiden 2 does correctly. With the return of popular weapons such as the Dragon Sword, Vigoorian Flails, Windmill Shuriken, and Lunar Staff the game rewards those how have played the first game by giving the a weapon that they are comfortable with and let's new player have a same glimpse into the previous title. The game does not stop there it has given players a handful of new weapons that offer some more than original and creative ways to fight against the hoards of enemies that you will encounter in this adventure. The battle system seemingly unflawed with minor problems in fighting sequences. For example the bases of your combos are a light, quick attack and a harder, slower. No matter which sequence of attacks that you throw at certain enemies they will be simply over thrown and disregarded by the bigger enemies. This not a major problem but can be quite aggregating at times after happening a couple of times in a row.

Another thing that this title does is that it rewards the player for learning combos and pulling off more difficult maneuvers like the izuna drop which will instantly kill an enemy. The button combinations are simple enough to remember but are complex enough so that a novice could not just pick the controller and master these techniques, give the gamer a great sense of accomplishment upon finishing one of these moves. Besides the action packed battle system the boss fights are fantastic. Team Ninja does a great job of making the boss fight monumental. Whether it is achieve by making the bosses enormously huge or by giving them lightning wielding hands they certainly establish that there is always a slim to zero chance that you will be walking out of these fights alive, which make player feel great after beating any boss. The best and newest edition to the game is the new obliteration system that has been added. This system enables the player finish off enemies after severing a limb from an enemy in a quite flavorful and theatrical sequence.

Let's Alright, now that we have pointed out what is good about the game, we must bring you the bad. Now this lovely hack and slash title does have a few speed bumps on it's highway to greatness. The first and probably most important is the story. While the story is not horrible it does hold this game back from being a triple "A" title not to be forgotten. Titles like these generally don't have nor need an immense story but the story in Ninja Gaiden 2 fails to attach the player to any of the characters in the game except Ryu. This plot makes sense but stretches from fighting human ninjas in present day Japan to fighting an ancient greater fiend on top of the Statue of Liberty and continues to drop our ninja friend in vast parts of the earth and some parts that may not be on earth, leaving the gamer to wonder how in the world did this ninja get to this destination.

In addition to the weird and uncompelling story the music is lack luster and faintly in the background of the vibrant action taking place on the screen and hardly makes the player feel enraged and ready to kick butt. The last thing about the game that is a bit frustrating is the fact that the game rarely rewards you outside of the X-Box live achievements (which pretty much don't do anything) the game doesn't offer any special weapons, items or combo for your extracurricular exploration except for the non profitable crystals skulls which do absolutely do nothing.

Overall

These few flaws are not enough to stop the addicting fun of hacking ninja limbs to pieces and obliterating beast and machines with the mere commands of your buttons. Any fan of game play should pick this title up. This title lives up to the expectations of it's predecessors but doesn't go above and beyond, an daunting task to ask of any game, with all facts considered this game Ninja Gaiden 2 an illustrious...

Too Human takes a cyber punk retelling of Norse mythology. Instead of the typical gods that you would expect to see, the Norse gods are cybernetically enhanced humans. You play Baldur, one of their gods. In fact, you are the son of Odin. As the son of Odin, it is your job to keep watch over and protect the human race from an approaching army of machines led by the demented Loki and bent on the destruction of mankind.

There are five classes you can choose to play, but the demo only allows the option to play the Champion. With five choices and only one option, one can feel a little unsure of whether or not to buy this game to make the final decision.

Berserker

With the Berserker you will find they favor fast, close-quarters combat. They are the only class in the game that can dual-wield swords or staffs.

Defender

The Defender's job is to be the tank. Massive amounts of armor makes him a perfect beating post to ensure the enemy's attention is on no one but him, so that his allies with less armor can unload their fury upon the enemies around him.

Commando

The Commando is your tactical, long-range combat class. This class can stand in the back and deal out explosions and damage if your defender can keep the attention of all of the enemies before you. Chess has experienced a long trek throughout history, bringing it to the present day. It has experienced a variety of forms from a number of different countries, each putting a unique spin on the game. In its modern incarnation, Chess is derived most heavily from Europe in the late 15th Century, where most of the common rules of the day became established. Since this time, Chess has formed a hold on many of the intelligent minds of each Century, never disappearing from the common view. Many books have been written on Chess from a variety of locations and authors, placing it high in the spotlight of intelligent, popular games which can both entertain and stimulate.

The first game from which Chess came to be born was originated in India in the 6th Century. It was originally called "Chaturanga," which translates into "four divisions of the military." These divisions, chariots, elephants, infantry, and calvary, were all represented by pieces much like Rooks, Bishops, Pawns, and Knights respectively. This game was played on an eight by eight board, which while uncheckered, had certain spaces with special marks. The meanings of these marks aren't currently known today, but do not seem to have special meaning to the game itself. This game, the earliest that has been found, seems to be the birthplace of Chess.

From Chaturanga, travellers carried the game to the Far East. Here, the game began to be played on the intersecting lines instead of the blank spaces themselves. The purpose of the game was to render the opponent's King, sometimes referred to as a General, as completely useless, much in line with a modern Checkmate. This game shares many elements with another popular game, Go, which also comes from Eastern Asia. The pieces for this version of Chess are commonly flat, marked pieces, much like a traditional checkers set.

Through Persia, the Byzantine Empire, and the expanding Arabic empire, however, the game slowly began to reach Europe. The Norman Conquest of England reached areas which played Chess early on, although the game was unpopular with Northern Europeans at this point. It wasn't until Chess pieces began to be depicted as they are today- Kings, Queens, Bishops, Knights, Rooks, and Pawns, or men of arms- in the middle of the 12th Century that Chess began to grow popular with the people.

In 1475 AD, however, drastic changes were made to the game, evolving it into the game that Chess is today. The Queen was granted powers that had never been seen on a Chessboard before. Bishops were granted more power as well, allowing the game to begin to focus more on long-ranging attacks which ultimately sped the game up. It is also believed that the transition of the pieces into more courtly images, rather than military ones, helped the game to catch hold in Europe. In the middle of the 19th Century, Chess began to take an even stronger hold, becoming a popular game played among intellectuals. Chess tournaments became popular and every since then, the game has held a place in common public knowledge.

There are a number of different Chess moves which exist that have all been popularized with special names to clarify exactly what they stand for. Sometimes these moves are named after the person who frequented them, being called a special form of offense or defense. Occasionally, these moves are named after an abstract theory about the game itself. An En Passant, however, is named for exactly what it stands for. Taken from the French for, "in passing," the term describes exactly what is happening on the board with the move.

Chess used to play by somewhat different rules, with castling never formerly being allowed, Queens and Bishops were limited in how far they could move in any one direction, and Pawns were never allowed to move more than one space at a time. In the 14th and 15th Centuries, however, the rules of Chess began to slowly change and all of the above mentioned examples now became permissible. This did pose a problem, though, with some of the Pawns. When Pawns were allowed to move up to two spaces on their first move, they could sometimes land in a position which would place them directly next to a Pawn of an opposite color. Being directly next to that Pawn of the opposite color, the original Pawn became unable to be captured. This would often result in an excess of Pawns on the board and became problematic to many of the strategies of the game.

To avoid the complications that this issue started to arise, another rule was added to the specifics of Chess. Rather than remove the rule which allowed Pawns to be removed two spaces, a special rule was customized to make up for the problem that Pawns which landed next to each other could pose. If a Pawn takes its initial move of two spaces and lands directly next to another Pawn of the opposite color, thus preventing the Pawn from being captured by normal rules, En Passant can come into play. The player of the opposite Pawn is allowed to move their Pawn one space diagonally, so that it is now directly behind the original Pawn. The original Pawn is then captured, as if it had never been allowed to move the original two spaces and only could move one instead. This places the Pawn of the opposite color into the space that the original Pawn would have occupied and the original Pawn is considered a captured piece.

En Passant is helpful in the fact that it helps to clear the chessboard a bit before heavy strategic decisions begin to come into play. Having too many pawns on the board can clutter a space and begin to hinder some of the more brilliant Chess strategies that players could enact. Space is sometimes needed on a board to play out a battle and the removal of pawns can be a very important part of a player's strategy. The beauty of the En Passant move is that it allows a player on the offense to not be thwarted by special Pawn movements, allowing them to strike while they have an opportunity.

A story with relatively few words but full of meaning, The Music of Life is the life of a frustrated musician. The story is told by a narrator who meets the musician in a train station probably in Siberia and in a snowstorm. The narrator in the middle of many stranded travelers looks for a chair when the sound of soft music beckons him to a deserted part of the train station where old furniture is stored. There he meets this musician and tells us his story as coincidences bring them together, on and off, several times.

During the Stalin Era, Alexei Berg, the pianist, escapes from Moscow just before his first public recital. As he does so, he finds out that his parents are arrested, soon to be sent to exile. After quite a few incidents where people hide him and he narrowly escapes from harm, he finds his way to a battleground where Russians fought Germans in World War II. He dons the identity of a dead Russian soldier who looks like him and manages to fight in the war to later become the driver of a general whose life he saves during the war.

While working for the general, the musician falls for the general's young daughter who proves to be a callous and frivolous girl. When Alexei's mask falls, he is sent to Siberia for several labor-hardened years. This tragic story does not end with a disaster, but it is bleak throughout resembling the work of the older Russian masters, Chekhov and Dostoyevski.

What captivated me was author's use of selective language with intense economy, which reminded me of poetry. This story was originally written in French, then translated into other languages; although, in spirit, it always stayed Russian. The translator Geoffrey Strachan, too, deserves high praise for this successful translation.

The author, Andre Makine, was born in Russia in Krasnoyarsk in 1957 and was granted political asylum in France in 1987. In 1995 his novel Dreams of My Russian Summers won the Goncourt Prize and the Mdicis Prize, Frances two most prestigious literary awards.

I believe that if a person is going to commit a violent act, then that person already had the propensity to commit violence all along. Better communication skills; not a term usually associated with technology types. Perhaps you've heard the story about the man who asked the engineer what time it was, and the engineer told him how to build a watch?

Exaggeration?
Perhaps, but there is many a true story about firms meeting with clients, and the client asks the IT guy if the system will work. The IT guy's response goes something like this: "It certainly should. We did all our design reviews, held code walk thrus, tested it in system test, user acceptance test, load test. Yeah, we're feeling pretty good at this point."
The right answer, of course, is "yes, we guarantee it".

To be fair, it's not easy for tech pros these days. Many of their business counterparts are relatively tech savvy. They don't know if the VP of Marketing that they are talking to has detailed knowledge of web technology, or if they don't know their browser from their Bowzer (that's for you Sha Na Na fans).

Tips for Tech Pros
Technology professionals who don't want to be treated like mushrooms, who want direct involvement with clients and the chance to participate in decision making, need to develop better communication skills. It's not too hard if they focus on four key behaviors:

Adapt to your audience. Figure out where they start from on the technical knowledge scale. You don't want to lose them, and you don't want to talk down to them. If you're not sure, ask. They'll usually give you a straight answer.

Repairing your Xbox 360 is really not that hard if you own some basic tools and have a little patience. First of all let me say if your console is still under warranty do not open the unit up. You will void your warranty.

There is nothing worse than buying the latest game and not being able to play it. If your Xbox console has stopped working. You can send it back to Microsoft and wait forever or you can learn how to maintain and repair it yourself. Internally it is very similar to your home computer.

The first step in repair is getting it open without damaging the case. First you will want to lay out a soft towel or blanket on your work surface.

Next you need to remove the faceplate. There are latches on the ends of the faceplate internally. You cannot see them from the outside. Laying your console flat, squeeze the ends of your face plate and pull forward. It will pop off.

Once the faceplate has been removed, you can remove the side panels. To release the tabs, insert a thin, round screwdriver or punch into the holes on either end of the white case panels and gently push. Be careful not to break them.

You will now be able to see the metal chassis inside. You can now remove the bottom of your unit. Apply gentle pressure with a flathead screwdriver to release the tabs on the front and back. You'll need to insert the screwdriver between the white panels to detach the back tabs.

You can now remove the top portion. At this point you will need a torx screwdriver. If you do not have one you can buy a cheap set at your local hardware store. Do not try to use a regular flat head or Phillips, you will damage the torx screws.

Remove the 6 torx screws located near the four corners and center of the chassis. Remember where the longer ones came from.

At this point you can lift out the DVD unit and you will find the CPU underneath. You now have access to repair the internal components.

One of the most common problems is with the DVD unit. This is an easy fix and there is no need to pay someone else to repair it.

In the good old days, back when the Internet had about 10 users and the web was a far off vision, PCs were called Home Computers and anyone could learn to write computer games. Three of us set up in business to write and sell our own games for the ZX Spectrum (Aka Timex/Sinclair) and Commodore 64. We didnt sell many games but we were saved by getting into the game conversion business. A publisher would release a hit on the Commodore 64 and wed write the Timex, Amstrad, MSX, CBM 16 etc versions. It took about 3 months for one person to produce a game.

That was 20 years ago and things have changed a lot since then. The games industry is now a massive multi billion dollar business and development teams can number 50 or more. My first game had me as programmer, artist, and beep designer (well it wasnt proper sound!). I did everything. Back then games were written in assembler and you had to learn 6502 and Z80. Nowadays with a few exceptions games are written in C and C++. The days of back room programmers arent entirely gone- there is also retro remake and indie scene, e.g. http://retrospec.sgn.net/ but unless you have an exceptionally brilliant idea, you are not likely to get into the mainstream game business as a one man outfit writing Blockbuster PC games.

Its not all bad news though- if you can program to a very good standard and have learnt some of the techniques- eg 3d maths, artificial intelligence (ai), and can produce demos of your code then you may be able to get a job in the market. There are plenty of books and websites that will guide you through the intricacies of DirectX and before long youll be a guru on vertex shaders etc. Sign up on games development sites like http://gamasutra.com/ (it's free) and look for jobs. 4. Flash Games. Flash development is a skill in itself, though programming in ActionScript (which is JavaScript under a different name) is not that hard. There is a definite career path available through programming Flash games and there are plenty of books to teach you to write games in Flash. 5. Mobile Phone and PDA games. This has become a big growth area recently and is likely to continue its growth as phones get more powerful. Unlike the console world, Software Development Kits (SDKS) are available for free from mobile phone manufacturers.
